A GUNMAN who killed 10 people in a shooting rampage in Montenegro started his vile spree by targeting two children.

Cops say the 34-year-old used a hunting rifle to first kill two kids ages 8 and 11 and their mother, who lived as tenants in the attacker's house in Cetinje's Medovina neighborhood.

He then then walked into the street and randomly shot 13 more people, seven of them fatally.

The shooter was believed to have been killed by a local resident, dispelling earlier reports that said the gunman had been shot by police.

State TV RTCG reported the gunman wounded another six people, including a policeman, in the city's Medovina neighborhood near the seat of the former royal government.

The city is 22 miles west of Podogrica, the capital of the small Balkan nation.

The site of the attack was blocked off by police.

Prime Minister Dritan Abazovic wrote on his Telegram channel that there had been an unprecedented tragedy in Cetinje, calling on the nation "to be, in their thoughts, with the families of the innocent victims, their relatives, friends and all the people of Cetinje".

The incident marks the deadliest shooting in the Adriatic nation in decades.

Montenegro is famed for its picturesque beaches framed by nearby mountains that have long been a draw for tourists.

The shooting comes as the country is in the full throes of its tourism high season.
