Top US Republican Paul Ryan says he will no longer defend Donald Trump after presidential candidate’s disastrous week

THE top Republican has told his party that he will no longer defend Donald Trump after a series of scandals, it has been reported.

While not formally revoking his endorsement of Trump - like a number of other prominent Republicans - the House Speaker Paul Ryan has told politicians that he will now dedicate his time to protecting the party's House of Representatives majority.

, citing a source who was on the conference call when the bombshell dropped, reports Ryan told members: "You all need to do what’s best for you in your district."

This appears to be a green light for them to disavow Trump to win support from increasingly horrified American voters.

"The speaker is going to spend the next month focused entirely on protecting our congressional majorities," said AshLee Strong, Ryan's spokeswoman.

Donald Trump is facing fresh racism allegations after TV producers hinted at the existence of a tape where the Republican presidential candidate uses the vile slur ‘n****r’.
