Bradford named ‘Curry Capital’ of Britain for a record breaking SIXTH time in a row

THE West Yorkshire city retained the crown after fighting off hot competition from the likes of Glasgow and Leicester

FANCY a curry? It's official - Bradford is the place to be.

The West Yorkshire city has been crowned the Curry Capital of Britain for a record sixth year in a row, fighting off hot competition from the likes of Glasgow and Leicester.

Judges praised the city's tourist board for Curry Capital events, activities and charitable contributions throughout the competition - and, of course, the tasty cooking.

This year's award was dished out to mark the start of National Curry Week, which will feature such spectacles as the World Poppdadom Tower Record Attempt and the Samosa Speed Challenge, as well as the Great British Curry Quiz.

Colleen Groves, one of the founders of the Curry Capital competition, said: “It is a well-deserved victory.

The Bradford team members work so well together to best demonstrate the level of cooperation and community spirit that already exists in the city. This is the kind of community cohesion that Peter Groves envisaged when he set up the competition 15 years ago."

Bradford's record-breaking sixth win on the trot takes its title haul well beyond that of fellow city of spice Glasgow, which won four titles between 2000 and 2010.

This year's successful campaign to retain the curry crown included a special Curry Capital Olympics event and a traditional garden party celebrating the Queen’s 90th birthday, organised by the district council's Visit Bradford department.

The tourist board also ran a dedicated safety campaign with Yorkshire Fire Service as part of the winning bid - perhaps helpful for those with a burning problem after sampling a local madras.

Councillor Sarah Ferriby, member for environment, sport and culture at City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council, said: “To say I’m thrilled is an understatement - I’m absolutely over the moon. Each year our bids have to be bigger and better than ever before to retain our crown of Curry Capital of Britain.

"To win the award for a record-breaking six years in a row is testament to the hard work and dedication of our team."
