Officers from Greater Manchester Police said the 60- and 27-year-old men "let drink get the better of time" and "talked themselves into being arrested" as they tried to board the Monarch Airlines departure, believed to be flight 660.

The pair, who haven't been named, were part of a group - the rest of which successfully boarded the aircraft.

The force confirmed the passengers were so drunk that even if they'd managed to get to the gate on time, they may have been refused entry to the flight anyway.

It's thought the men remained in custody today as officers prepared to speak to them.

In a statement published on Facebook, police said: ": “The two men who were arrested after being refused flight to Dalaman with Monarch were in the same party and let the drink get the better of them.

“No other members of the public were involved but as they arrived too late at the gate due to spending too much time in the bar, they missed the flight, but had they got there on time, it’s quite possible they would have been refused access flight anyway.

“When police arrived the two men continued arguing and instead of just being escorted landside, talked themselves into being arrested.”

The arrests come in the wake of minsters announcing a review into the sale of alcohol at airports - as so-called 'air rage' incidents have quadrupled in the last three years alone.
