Magistrate orders arrest of cop’s son who killed 2 men while high after he fails to appear in dock over ‘hospital fight’

A COURT has ordered the arrest of a policeman's son after he failed to appear in the dock over an alleged hospital fight.

Max Coopey, 20, had been given bail after allegedly assaulting Paul Storey in December and was sent several warning letters about today's hearing.

Coopey was living with Met Police sergeant dad Russel and former Met policewoman Catherine in Ascot, Berkshire, at the time of the alleged incident.

An immediate warrant to detain him before he can be put in the dock was issued today after he failed to appear at Wimbledon magistrates' court.

He has been charged with common assault over the incident in Kingston hospital, Surrey.

Coopey first began offending aged 12 when he was convicted of common assault in December 2013.

And in August 2018 he killed sales manager Jason Imi, 48, and his colleague John Shackley, 61, when he hit them with his dad's Audi while high on cannabis.

But he was only charged with drug driving and spared jail because an inquest heard Cooper, then 17, would have been unable to see the men until a second before impact.

He was made to pay £105, which his parents said they could fund.

The two men, who were walking back from a work dinner, died instantly after being hit by Coopey and thrown over the roof of the vehicle in August 2018.

Then 17, Coopey was driving while over the limit for cannabis and had only passed his driving test two months earlier.

He had also been arrested for drug-driving just eight weeks before the crash and had five previous convictions for seven offences, including common assault and handling stolen goods.

Last year it was announced Coopey was being sued privately by Mr Imi's wife Sarah, along with their children Ethan, Lily and Noah.

They settled in February for £800,000.

Court documents filed to the London County Court alleged he was negligent when driving.

Acromas Insurance Company Ltd, of London, the insurer of the Audi A5 car owned by Mr Coopey's father, Russel, provided a defence statement - and denied that the teen had been impaired while driving.
