However, their efforts ended in tragedy.

Around three-and-a-half hours after the hunt began, Greater Manchester Police said crews had found the casualty's body.

"We've sadly located a body in Salford Quays after a report was made to us earlier this evening of a person getting into difficulty in the water," a spokesperson said.

"Their family has been kept updated by our officers.

"They are being supported at this extremely distressing time.";

No further information on the casualty is yet known.

The water's edge remains cordoned off this evening.

Firefighters had already been called to the spot earlier today to save a young swimmer in a separate incident.

Officials at Salford Fire Team said earlier this afternoon: "Crews have been at Salford Quays today, engaging with the public around staying safe in warmer weather.

"While speaking to the public, crews noticed a young person in difficulty in the water and quickly worked to rescue them using a throwline.

"We want to remind people to never be tempted to cool off by swimming in open water, or encourage your mates to jump into reservoirs, rivers, canals or ponds (or any other open water)."
