Brixton market fire: 100 firefighters tackle huge ‘wall of flames’ as busy streets evacuated

A MASSIVE blaze has torn through a warehouse next to a famous market sending a cloud of smoke hundreds of metres into the air.

100 firefighters and 15 fire engines were last night tackling the monster inferno in Brixton, South London, the London Fire Brigade said.

as panic breaks out amid the fire.

A plume of thick black smoke could be seen from miles away rising into the air over the market.

The fire reportedly broke out in a three-storey warehouse.

Electric Lane, a popular nightlife spot just a stones throw from Brixton Underground station, was sealed off.

reported how onlookers said the fire broke out by the Electric Lane entrance and appeared to be in a storage area.

 

In a statement, London Fire Brigade said: "Fifteen fire engines and around 100 firefighters are tackling a fire on Electric Lane in Brixton.

"A three-storey warehouse is alight.

"The Brigade's 999 Control Officers have taken 53 calls to the blaze.

"The Brigade was called at 2058. Fire crews from Clapham, West Norwood, Peckham, Old Kent Road, Chelsea and surrounding fire stations are at the scene.

"The cause of the fire is not known at this stage."
