A FOUR-year-old Syrian girl has been killed after picking up a cluster bomb she believed was a toy.

The tot was collecting water in the war-torn city of Aleppo when the fragment exploded after she picked it up.

Tiny Eman survived for a short time in hospital with her horrific injuries.

But doctors in the Syrian city - deprived of essential medical equipment - could do little to save her life.

Haunting images showed Eman's battle to survive, her delicate frame riddled with awful wounds inflicted by the inhumane weapons.

Tragically, she died on Monday morning.

Yet the story of Eman is just one of thousands of children robbed of their innocence, and in many cases their lives, during Syria's bloody civil war.

Russian and Syrian bombing of the city has seen thousands killed as they try to avoid fighting between rebels and Bashar al-Assad's regime.

UNICEF estimates that 100 children were killed last week alone during fighting in the city.

A ceasefire brokered by Russia and the US broke down within days after an air strike destroyed a UN convoy taking aid to Aleppo.

The UN now estimates there are fewer than 30 doctors working to save lives in Aleppo - the world's most violent city.

More than 100 countries have signed a convention agreeing not to sell or use cluster bombs.

Russia, Syria and the USA were not among the signatories.
