Explicit photos and videos are alleged to show Coxswain Patterson, 43, and the wren engaging in sexual intercourse both on the submarine and at top-security HMNB Clyde, home of the UK’s nuclear deterrent.

Patterson’s sordid antics have been called “totally unacceptable”.

Royal Navy sources said he was unlikely to have a future career, despite being the most senior executive member of the ship’s company.

A source said: “He was having an affair with a wren on board.

“He was in charge of about 160-odd men and a couple of women.

“Apparently, it was common knowledge at the base that they were a couple.

“They were carrying on while they were on the boat.

“They got found out and he got pulled up by the bosses.

“A lot of evidence was sent to the Royal Navy concerning what happened.”

It is understood Patterson, a senior member of the submarine’s management team, had a 27-year career.

Leaked photos appear to show the disgraced posing for sordid selfies aboard the vessel.

Taking photos on board the high-security sub is forbidden.

According to a report, “a number of pornographic photographs and videos” of both Patterson and the woman came to light.

The content is said to have been discovered on phones and laptops off base after Patterson denied an affair.

Details were then sent to top brass and documents reveal they are taking matters “very seriously”.

One naval source said bosses had thoroughly investigated Patterson for having a relationship with a member of the ship’s company and that his future was “not tenable”.

They added: “He is in the process of being removed from the service.

“His job title was coxswain. He was the most senior executive member of the ship’s company.

“He’s not what we would like to keep as a member of the forces.

“His behaviour is totally unacceptable for a whole lot of reasons.”

Officers are banned from relationships with junior ranks and sexual relations are not allowed on board vessels during service.

A spokesman said: “The Royal Navy demands the highest of standards from all those who serve.

“Inappropriate and unacceptable behaviours are always investigated and we will not hesitate to take appropriate action against those who fail to meet our standards.”

It is believed the wren was spoken to as part of the investigation.
