From the gag of the day, to the party’s villain – here are the highlights from the Tory conference

The Sun's Westminster Correspondent reports back on all the best bits from the Conservative Party Conference in Birmingham yesterday

Anna Sourbry

The Conservative Party Conference is underway in Birmingham - a big one for the party, as it is Theresa May's first as PM, and the first since the Brexit vote.

Here, our Westminster Correspondent rounds up the highlights from the third day.

  • THERE was one thing on Welsh Tory leader Andrew Davies’ mind when he gave his speech first thing this morning: “Mark my words, we will make breakfast . . Er . . Brexit a success.”
  • SHORTLY afterwards Boris Johnson arrived at a hotel restaurant table to tuck into a full English loudly declaring: “Brexit means breakfast, and we're going to make a success of it.”
  • ASKED what most surprised her about becoming PM, Theresa May quipped that she is "asked to do a lot more selfies these days".
  • WHEN appointing him chief Brexit negotiator, the PM asked David Davis what to call the new department for leaving the EU: "Let’s go with Exit so I can call it Department X”, he replied, adding: “Sadly it didn’t catch on”.
  • WHEN Iain Duncan Smith quit the Government in March it was reported David Cameron had branded him a s*** on the phone. But the ex-PM told aides: “That's the one word I didn’t use.”
  • HATS off to the delegate who renamed their personal wifi hotspot “Brexit means Brexit”.

GAG OF THE DAY

One-time Tory leadership contender David Davis explains how it would have been different if he had won instead of David Cameron in 2005: 'I would have hugged a hoodie, but a bit harder.'

Villain of the day

2

Anna Soubry for suggesting Leave voters can't eat curry and be concerned about immigration: 'Some say, 'I don't like that foreign muck. What are we having for tea? Chicken tikka masala.'

ST. THERESA BROWN NOSE OF THE DAY

THE 'JUST GETTING BY' AWARD

Hundreds of Tory delegates queued around the block to get into fringe meeting about Northern Irish politics. It turns out they were serving free champagne.
