Good Morning America's George Stephanopoulos has been hit with major backlash from fans over his interview with Henry Kissinger.

Stephanopoulos, who serves as one of the primary GMA anchors alongside Robin Roberts, recently conducted a one-on-one interview with Former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, 99.

The 61-year-old TV host and political commentator shared the news of his controversial meeting on Twitter on Tuesday morning.

He : "I spoke to former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger about his new book, 'Leadership: Six Studies in World Strategy,' his influential life, 50 years since Watergate and much more -- take a look."

Stephanopoulos' interview comes as June 17, 2022, marked the 50th anniversary of Watergate - the 1972 break-in of the Democratic National Committee headquarters at Washington DC's Watergate Office Building.

The interview was aired on GMA Tuesday morning, shown on ABCNews Life tonight, and available on Hulu, Stephanopoulos said.

"Is this guy still credible?' a fourth Twitter user asked, followed by another comment consisting of just open-mouth vomiting emojis.

The Sun reached out to ABC's Good Morning America for comment on the backlash but did not receive an immediate reply.

In a video clip of the interview, shared by Stephanopoulos, the GMA host is seen asking Kissinger: "I interviewed you 25 years ago on the 25th anniversary of Richard Nixon's resignation.

"We're now at the 50th anniversary of Watergate. At the time you told me about the night before he resigned where you said 'Mr. President history is going to teach you more kindly than the present-day.' Do you still believe that?"

Kissinger responded: "When I said to him, 'history will treat you better than your contemporaries did,' I believe that.

"It's foreign policy ... it's held up."

He later added: "Nixon was a complicated person but in moments of crisis he made courageous decisions."

In response to the , one Twitter user commented: "He apologized for everything? All the evil he's done in his life?

"No?! Then why are you putting this into the world? Why are you giving this thoroughly disgraced man airtime?"

The interview comes nearly seven years after Politico Magazine published 10 historians' on October 10, 2015.

Nicholas Thompson, editor of The New Yorker, dubbed Kissinger as "one of the worst people to ever be a force for good."

"He manipulated colleagues and nations. He faked the beginning of a nuclear war in order to advance some perverse personal game theory," Thompson, who wrote The Hawk and the Dove: Paul Nitze, George Kennan and the History of the Cold War, said.

"He callously perpetrated international crimes. But he was a man of ideas at the center of an American strategy that ultimately benefited the world in some grand sense."

Another historian, David Greenberg of Rutgers University, said Kissinger "may be the most overrated public figure of our times."

"Kissinger’s policies were not only morally flawed but also disastrous as Cold War strategy," Princeton University Gary Bass said.

However, Luke Nichter - co-editor of The Nixon Tapes - noted he was "divided" on the German-born American politician's legacy.

Nichter explained: "We are divided on his legacy because he remains so relevant today; we’ve spent nearly five times longer debating his accomplishments than he spent accomplishing them.

"Hero or villain, he remains a larger than life figure, in part, because he mattered."
