TWO people have died in a terrifying helicopter crash after a chopper plunged into a field near a Yorkshire village.

The public has been warned to stay away as emergency services deal with the scene.

The crash happened today in Burton, North Yorkshire, police said.

It is currently unknown what caused it.

North Yorkshire Police said the incident happened shortly before midday and people are "strongly urged" to avoid the area.

Meanwhile, the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) has sent a team of investigators to probe the scene.

An AAIB statement said: "The AAIB has been notified of an accident in Burton in Lonsdale, North Yorkshire involving a light helicopter.

"An investigation has been launched and a team of inspectors are travelling to the accident site to begin making inquiries."
