The plague of violence was uncovered by The Sun on Sunday after a prison’s governor was beaten up.

Paul Cawkwell was so badly hurt at HMP Wayland in Norfolk he needed facial surgery.

Weeks later a female officer was brutally assaulted at Brinsford Young Offenders Institution, West Mids.

Ministry of Justice figures leaked to us show assaults on jail staff have almost doubled since the start of the year.

There were also 8,065 prisoner-on-prisoner attacks between April and August.

Of those, 109 were sex attacks.

Glyn Travis, of the Prison Officers Association, blasted the “out of control” savagery.

He said: “I fear an officer will be murdered.

“The rise in serious assaults reflects how prisons are overcrowded, illegal drugs are in abundance and staff numbers have been cut.”

Justice Secretary Liz Truss has launched a review of jails.

The Ministry of Justice said: “We do not comment on leaked documents.”
