On Queen

THERESA May reveals her proudest moment was tinged with sadness – as her parents were not alive to see her become PM.

She said it was a “huge occasion” when she went to Buckingham Palace to receive the seals of office from the Queen 81 days ago.

But as her limo glided past the crowds and through the gates, she was lost in thoughts of her late mum and dad.

She said: “It was a real moment for me. But I couldn’t help thinking how sad it was that my parents weren’t able to see this.

“They both died when I was in my early 20s so they never witnessed me becoming an MP in 1997, Home Secretary in 2010 or, now, this.

“But they would have been incredibly proud.”

Mum and Dad would be proud

Mrs May describes meeting the Queen on July 13 as “a real moment”.

She said: “She is such a fantastic example to us all in terms of her duty and steadfastness. She really is impressive.”

Mrs May’s clergyman father Hubert Brasier was killed in a car crash in 1981 and her mother Zaidee, who had multiple scleroris died a year later.

She said: “A number of people who have known me over the years and wrote in to congratulate me when I became Prime Minister made reference to my parents, saying ‘your mum and did would really be proud of you.’”

With a hint of sadness in her eyes, she added: “I think they would be. I hope that may be they both know what’s happening.”

On shoes

SHOES are the greatest love of Theresa May’s life – and she can’t resist adding to her collection.

“They are my biggest weakness and my greatest extravagance,” she admits.

How many pairs does she own? “Not enough,” she replies.

When we suggest she could do for kitten heels what Margaret Thatcher did for pussy-bow blouses, she roars with laughter and retorts: “That sounds like a great excuse to go out and buy some more shoes.”

Studying fashion is another favourite pastime of the new PM – and she expanded her wardrobe after moving into Number 10.

“I did go on a mini spending spree at the first opportunity after taking this job,” she confesses.

“But it was partly because of the amount of travel I do. So I was adding to my wardrobe, rather than changing it.”

Mrs May was also thrilled to meet her style heroine Vivienne Westwood, who sported a “Theresa Talk Vivienne” logo T-shirt, at the British Fashion Council.

She said: “She’s a great designer and I wear some of her clothes. We weren’t able to talk for long – just a brief word – but I hope we shall in the future.”

On husband

PHILIP May is relishing his role as “First Gentleman” of Downing Street.

“He’s taking it all in his stride,” said the PM. “Yes, some people like to draw comparisons with Denis Thatcher, which he finds amusing.”

But she chuckles: “He doesn’t play golf and I certainly won’t be letting him sneak off for a snifter.”

The couple have yet to decide whether Philip, who has a successful career in the City, will join her for the on-stage camera call after her big conference speech on Wednesday.

Mrs May: “I’ve got to talk to him about it yet.

“His key moment so far was when somebody described him in a newspaper as a snappy dresser.

“He quite enjoyed that and rather fancies himself as a style item.”

Then she joked: “Of course, we all know that’s my role.”

On movies

THE Tory whips landed themselves in Mrs May’s bad books after banning her from attending the premiere of Skyfall.

She cheekily asked for permission to skip a crucial vote to see the James Bond movie when she was Home Secretary in 2012.

Mrs May recalls: “I tried to persuade them that as I was responsible for the security service I should be allowed to go and watch it.

“But they didn’t buy it. I was very disappointed and had to go and watch it another time. The whips were not in my good books.”

On poetry

MRS May told how she was fired up to win the leadership race by reading her favourite poem.

She was inspired to emerge calmly from the chaotic campaign by the words of Rudyard Kipling’s “If”.

The century-old verse begins: “If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs and blaming it on you; If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, But make allowance for their doubting too…”

It has been a favourite of hers for many years, but she turned to it again in July as her three rivals for the top job tore each other apart.

The PM said: “It’s probably my favourite poem of all time and I return to it often.

“It contains powerful and compelling advice, stirringly written, on how to stay focussed.”

She quoted her favourite line, word perfect: “If you can fill the unforgiving minute with 60 seconds worth of distance run; Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it, And – which is more – you’ll be a Man, my son.”

On cooking

Mrs May gave removal men a headache when she moved into Number 10 – by taking 100 recipe books with her.

She said: “I love cooking and can’t wait to get into the kitchen whenever I have a spare moment.”

Her signature dish is slow-cooked roast lamb with garlic and rosemary.

“It’s comfort food, really,” she admits, “but it’s very good.”

Asked to name Philip’s favourite dish, she replies sternly: “Whatever I cook him.”

Mrs May’s favourite TV programmes are Masterchef and Great British Bake Off – and she has cookery books by Jamie Oliver and Yotam Ottolenghi.

But asked about Delia Smith, she snaps: “I am NOT a Delia person. I have a wide range of styles, but I don’t have a single Delia Smith book. She is far too precise for me.”
