If you have any doubts about the political nature of the dispute, look at wrecker-in-chief Mick Lynch. The £124,000-a-year RMT general secretary wants to drag Britain to the chaos of the 1970s when Marxist union barons held sway.

This wannabe Arthur Scargill admits he is “nostalgic for the power and control” militant unions once wielded. Meanwhile millions of ordinary Brits are pawns in his cynical game.

Keir Starmer’s silence is shameful, if hardly surprising.

Since Sir Keir took charge, unions gearing up for a summer of discontent have stuffed his party’s pockets with £10million in donations.

Taxpayers shelled out £16billion to prop up the railways during the pandemic and are still forking out a fortune for half-empty trains.

The investment is unsustainable and over half of the public agree the 11 per cent pay claim is totally unreasonable.

Boris Johnson must steel himself for this union fight. He literally cannot afford to lose.

About 3,500 of them have vanished into the underground economy. Many more are still fighting scandalously prolonged legal battles, no doubt maintained by taxpayer-funded legal aid and state benefits.

No wonder Home Secretary Priti Patel is furious at the delays to her Rwanda plan to deter illegal Channel crossings.

Among its chief critics are hand-wringing bishops and archbishops, who describe the Rwanda plan as shameful.

But at the same time the Church of England has boosted its investments in controversial firm Alibaba, which enjoys close ties with the brutal Chinese communist regime.

It’s time clerics practised what they preach.
