Chief Constable ordered to resign after ‘unacceptable insensitivity’ to victims of Hillsborough disaster

A CHIEF Constable was told to quit for showing “unacceptable insensitivity” to the victims of the Hillsborough disaster, it emerged yesterday.

David Crompton was suspended in April by South Yorks’ Police and Crime Commissioner Dr Alan Billings after inquests found 96 fans were unlawfully killed.

But this week Dr Billings backed demands he should resign.

Mr Crompton had apologised on behalf of the force after the inquest.

But the next day he tried to justify questioning of victims’ relatives by the force’s legal team.

He alluded to “other contributory factors”, even though the inquest had ruled Liverpool fans were not to blame for the 1989 tragedy.

Now Dr Billings says: “His comment ‘other factors’ sent the wrong message. I call on the chief constable to resign with immediate effect.”

Mr Crompton has vowed to fight the decision in court.
