Boy aged THREE becomes lottery millionaire after scooping the jackpot on New Zealand’s ‘Premium Bonds’

The three-year-old had just got back from holiday with his family when they found out

A THREE-year-old boy has become New Zealand's youngest Bonus Bonds millionaire.

The tot, from Christchurch, won NZ$1 million (£560,700) in the investment lottery scheme set up when he was born with just NZ$250 (£140) worth of bonds, given by a relative.

According to , the boy returned home from holiday with his family when they were told the news.

His parents told the paper they were “pumping the air” with glee when they found out their son had beaten the one-in-35,000 odds to win.

The minted lad's mum said: “My husband was literally pumping the air when he was on the phone."

"As soon as he got off and told me, we were running around, so thrilled. It was definitely a jump-up-and-down moment.

"We always thought our boy was really special, he was born on Christmas Day, which is quite unique. And now he's the youngest Bonus Bonds winner to date."

Bonus Bonds are an investment that pays out thousands of prizes to savers every month.

The more people invest money into the fund the more chance they have of scooping a prize in the monthly lottery draw.

A Bonus Bonds spokesman said other young children had won Bonus Bonds prizes but the three-year-old was the youngest to collect the top monthly prize.

The oldest winner is 92 years old.

The spokesman added a Bonus Bonds manager could sell bonds to children under seven years old.

But prizes had to go to the the child's parent or guardian until they turned seven.

ANZ bank, which runs the scheme, confirmed the win but said it will not give out further info about the lucky winner to respect the family's wishes.
