Love Island: Michael Owen slams Scots football coach after sickening Gemma tweet

FOOTIE star Michael Owen slammed an under-18 women’s football coach who posted a sickening tweet about his teenage daughter Gemma in the latest series of Love Island.

But he hit out after Glasgow City FC under-18 academy coach Paul Proud reacted to his fears, Tweeting: “Can’t wait to see her getting smashed.”

The Tweet was followed by a series of laughing emojis, a thumbs up and an ‘ok’ emoji.

Proud - who claimed on Twitter he was an ex-professional player - said he had “resigned” from his position at the club.

But Owen, 42, slammed Proud for his comments.

He said: “What a fine example to set from a man in your responsible position.”

Other Twitter users criticised his comments. One said: “Nice comment from a fella who works with youths.”

Another added: “U18 coach of a girls team too.”

Proud’s Twitter feed revealed he was the coach for the Glasgow City FC under 18 development squad.

After he was contacted by The Scottish Sun about the comments Proud said he was no longer at the club.

He said: “My account has been deleted and I have resigned from my position with immediate effect so there is no story to run.”

He said the post was made “in jest”, that it was “taken out of context” and that the “correct action has been taken by myself to remove myself from the club”.

The appearance of the legend’s eldest daughter appearing on the ITV dating show has dominated social media in recent days.

Dad-of-four Owen had voiced concerns about seeing Gemma kissing male contestants on the show.

He recalled his shock at seeing her hop into bed with a man on her very first night, and expressed relief there was “no physical contact”.

He said: “No father wants to see physical contact, do they? I certainly don’t. If there is physical contact I think I’ll be throwing something at the screen. I don’t want to see kissing. Do not make me see kissing.”

Glasgow City FC is a women’s football team based in Glasgow that plays in SWPL 1, the top division of women’s football in Scotland.

The club - which has a series of academy teams and champions the women’s game - was contacted for comment.

Proud said he made the comment 'in jest'
