Tributes paid to blind teen in a wheelchair who died after falling down a flight of stairs at his school in Birmingham
Tearful mourners describe Muhammad Ghafoor, 15, as a 'lovely boy' who was 'always smiling'
HEARTFELT tributes have been paid to a blind disabled teen who died after falling down a flight of stairs at his school in Birmingham.
Mourners gathered to pay their respects to wheelchair-bound Muhammad Ghafoor at Lexells Central Mosque on Wednesday.
The first picture has emerged of the 15-year-old, who was described as “a lovely boy” whose smile “lit up the whole school“.
He died at Birmingham Children’s Hospital four days after the unexplained fall at Mayfield School on September 9.
Staff from the school joined hundreds of grieving friends and family to attend the funeral.
One said: “You’ll hear the same from everyone – he was a fantastic boy. Always smiling.
“We came to let the family know we feel their pain.”
Councillor Mahmood Hussain, who knows the family, praised teachers and assistants at Mayfield school for paying their respects.
He said: “I think it is a lovely gesture that teachers from the school went to the funeral. I think that was very important.”
An investigation has been launched into Muhammad’s death after police initially opened a probe.
It was passed to the coroner after no evidence of foul play emerged.
A source at the school said: “We don’t know how it happened and the family is distraught.”
Cllr Hussein said: “The family is very distressed and I hope there will be a thorough investigation taking place and we will find out what went on.”
Birmingham City Council’s executive director for education Colin Diamond described Muhammad’s death as a “tragedy”.
He pledged council support to help figure out what happened.
“We are working closely with staff to support the school and its community and are also working with all agencies, including the police, while the circumstances of this tragic event are fully investigated”, he said.
