Trafalgar Square evacuated as police discover suspicious package near London landmark
Shops and pubs were cleared as officers brought Whitehall's streets to a standstill
A SUSPICIOUS package found near London's Trafalgar Square led to a major evacuation of the area on Wednesday night.
Police cleared pedestrians from the streets around the landmark after the discovery at around 8pm Wednesday.
Nearby pubs and shops popular with tourists were also cleared during the "police incident".
Officers from Scotland Yard -- near to where the package was found -- completely cordoned off the area.
Twitter users spoke of traffic coming to a halt in the surrounding streets.

The area was reopened around at around 8:45pm as Police stood down.
Trafalgar Square is just one mile from Westminster Palace and a few hundred yards from Downing Street.
