Shropshire earthquake: Locals report ground and houses shaking as 3.8 tremor hits Shrewsbury

AN earthquake measuring 3.8 has rocked the Shrewsbury area.

Many locals around Telford took to Twitter to report they had felt the ground shake beneath them.

The earthquake monitoring site Volcano Discovery said seismic activity had been recorded.

They said: "We are receiving unverified early reports of ground shaking possibly caused by seismic activity in or near Telford, England, United Kingdom on 30 May 2022 (GMT) at approximately 14:35 GMT.

"There are no details yet on the magnitude or depth of this possible quake. If confirmed, we can expect more accurate data to emerge in the next few minutes.

"The location, magnitude and time mentioned are indicative, based on our best-fit seismic model. They are temporary until our AllQuakes monitoring service receives more exact scientific data from a national or international seismological agency."

The Love Telford page on Twitter posted: "I heard a rumble and felt the desk shake.

“The fact others have asked the question makes me think it must have been."

Another local took to social media to say she had felt her bed shake.

Michelle Jupp said: "That was a real WTF moment, Sat on my bed and it starts shaking then realised the whole house was shaking. It was over fast & I was like, did we just have an earthquake?

"Jumped on Facebook & apparently yes. I'm in Wem & saw people saying it was felt in Shrewsbury & Whitchurch too."

The British Geological Survey wrote on Twitter that the earthquake struck at 3.36pm at a depth of 8km.

It said: "BGS has received numerous reports that this event has been felt by residents in Shropshire and surrounding counties.”

The affected areas include Shrewsbury, Telford, Stafford and Stoke-on-Trent.

Caroline and Paul Blair, from Whitchurch some 10 miles away, told the : “We were sitting watching TV and I heard a noise like a door slamming if you have left two doors open through the house.

“Then we noticed that our TV, which is on a stand, was moving and then the sofa that we were both sitting on just rocked. It was so weird, it was like someone was jumping on it.”

One worried person wrote on Twitter: "Mini earthquake in the uk, anyone else have a mini heart attack to go with? Asking for a friend."

Another wrote on the site: "Anyone just feel an earthquake? #shropshire."
