Lidl to stop selling ‘single use’ 5p carrier bags but you can still get stronger ones for 9p
Budget supermarket says it hopes move will 'discourage consumers from a single use, throw-away mind-set'
LIDL has today announced it is to stop selling single-use plastic bags at all its stores across England, Scotland and Wales.
The budget supermarket said the bags – currently available to buy for 5p each – will be removed from shops by 1 July 2017.
But Lidl said the longer-lasting, re-useable bags will remain on sale for 9p.
The decision aims to “discourage consumers from a single use, throw-away mind-set”, the supermarket said.
The company added that the move would save an estimated 63million plastic bags every year – the equivalent of 760 tons of plastic.
Ryan McDonnell, commercial director of Lidl UK, said: “Our pledge to stop selling single-use carrier bags is all about promoting a more environmentally friendly alternative.
“It will directly encourage shoppers to think about sustainability, and the role they can play in reducing unnecessary plastic waste.
“The levy introduced by the Government last year was an important start, and as a responsible retailer, we see it as our role to invest in a sustainable future and to bring our customers on that journey with us.”
