Hilarious moment Wetherspoons punters jump on TABLES to escape rat scurrying around their feet

A HYSTERICAL video captures the dramatic moment Wetherspoon pub-goers jumped onto tables and chairs after spotting a rat scurrying around their feet.

The rodent wreaked havoc at the Bishop Vesey Wetherspoon pub in Birmingham earlier this month, where Sean Maguire was drinking with friends.

The 23-year-old trainee teacher filmed several punters standing on chairs and tables in hysterics having glimpsed the rat running around.

In the clip, Sean shouted: “Guys, there is a rat in the Bishop.”

Another shocked customer said: “Mate.”

The boozer then erupted into chaos as people pointed, trying to locate the hiding rat.

Sean then went to ” investigate” and edged over a nearby table in the busy pub.

Within seconds he spotted the rotund looking creature and shouted: “Ah, oh my god. Oh my god”.

Terrified, the rat scurried away out of sight.

While one person commented: “Somehow this is the most British thing I’ve ever seen.”

Speaking today, Sean, from Birmingham, said: “It was about 11 o’clock at night, I was sitting round a table with my friends when everyone started jumping on top of the tables and screaming.

“The rat then ran under our table so we did the same, I started recording and got it on camera.

“Then not long after that the bar staff asked everyone to leave.

“They were kind of just scrambling – I don’t think they really knew what to do.

“They just told everyone to leave.

“I was laughing to be honest, I thought it was hilarious.

“If there’s any pub you’re gonna find a rat in it will be a Wetherspoons.”

A spokesman for Wetherspoon said: “We are aware of a video circulating of a rodent in the customer area at the Bishop Vesey pub on 12 May.

“We can confirm that this was an isolated incident, where a rodent had entered the pub through the open doors.

“It is thought that the pest activity was as a result of building works taking place next door to the pub.

“In the two weeks since the incident, a full pest management plan has been implemented, which includes weekly visits by pest contractor, Rentokil, and a number of other prevention measures.

“While it is unfortunate that the incident occurred, we are pleased to note that the measures appear to have been successful but will continue to be reviewed.

“Finally, the sighting is in no way a reflection of the pub, which was awarded the maximum food hygiene rating of 5 (out of 5) by the local authority and reflects excellent standards of cleanliness and hygiene in place.”

This is not the first time a rat has caused havoc in a Wetherspoon pub.

In July 2017 a pub-goer filmed a rat at the James Watt, in Greenock, Inverclyde, running across a seat before jumping and disappearing under a table.
