Five kids hurt after being hit by a bus as they waited to go home outside primary school

FIVE children were hurt after they were hit by a bus outside a primary school.

The bus crashed into the kids - believed to be aged 11 to 16 - as they waited to go home after class at around 3.25pm yesterday.

Dyfed-Powys Police said there were no passengers on the bus.

Three children were airlifted while another child and the bus driver were taken by ambulance.

A fifth was treated at the scene in Llanfair Caereinion, Powys.

A statement from Dyfed-Powys Police said officers were at the scene of a road traffic collision on School Lane.

“A school bus and a number of young pedestrians were involved in the collision.

"The male driver of the bus and five children have been taken to hospital. There were no passengers on the bus," the force said.

“The road is closed with diversions in place. Please avoid the area if possible.”

Villagers were shocked at the commotion with a fleet of ambulances at the scene.

One said: "We've heard the driver must have blacked out at the wheel or collapsed and hit the children who were waiting to go home.

"This is such a quiet place and this is quite shocking."

County Councillor Gareth Jones said: "It's a huge shock to everybody in the town but times like this do bring everybody together.

"We are so grateful for the emergency services for their speed in attending and their professionalism and the staff of both schools.

Bus company AW Coaches - whose office is just a stone's throw from where the accident happened - said no one from the firm was available to comment.
