Man, 78, arrested over murder of 14-year-old schoolgirl Elsie Frost over 50 years later after police release photo of duffel coat suspect wore

Murder in 1965 has gone unsolved for over half a century

A PENSIONER has been arrested in connection with the murder of a 14-year-old girl more than 50 years ago.

Elsie Frost was stabbed to death beneath a railway line in Wakefield, West Yorkshire on October 9, 1965.

The arrest comes after police released a photo of what they believe the main suspect looked like -- complete with a mod-style duffel coat.

Peter Pickering, 78, has been arrested on suspicion of murder after the case was reopened last year.

He was scooped at a mental health unit, where he has been resident for many years.

Elsie had been on her way home from a school sailing club at the time of her death.

Her attacker sneaked up behind her and stabbed her in the back and head.

A huge police operation followed but the murder weapon was never found and no-one has been convicted.

 

 

In a statement, West Yorkshire Police said: "Officers from West Yorkshire Police`s Homicide and Major Enquiry Team (HMET) arrested a 78-year-old man in the Berkshire area on Tuesday 27 September on suspicion of the murder of 14-year-old Elsie Frost.

"The man is now in custody at a police station within the Thames Valley force area and will be questioned by West Yorkshire officers".

On the 50th anniversary of Elsie'a death BBC Radio 4's iPM programme began to look into her death, prompting a fresh police investigation.

Det Supt Wallen added: "Elsie's brother and sister have been kept fully appraised of the progress of the inquiry and I wish to commend them for their perseverance and that of members of the media in continuing to campaign for her and to put this case back in the public domain.

Reacting to the arrest Elsie's younger brother Colin told the BBC: "As a family, we're very pleased. All we wanted was to be taken seriously.

"We were aware that mistakes were made in 1965 but we've been impressed with the commitment of West Yorkshire Police in the re-investigation - the number of officers involved, the number of agencies involved."
