Witnesses said they heard between six and eight gunshots.

Law enforcement believes the incident may have stemmed from an argument between two men.

Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Dan Goodwin said: “Tonight's shooting at MTSU is a tragedy. We mourn with the family who lost a loved one and the victim injured.

“Police found two people suffering from gunshots near the tennis courts. The shooting occurred as individuals were leaving the graduation.”

MTSU tweeted that there’s no threat on the campus but the investigation remains active.

Riverdale High School will be closed on Thursday as a precaution.

Counseling will be provided to students when school goes back into session on Friday, Rutherford County Schools spokesperson James Evans said.

Any suspicious activity should be reported at 615-898-2424.
