The 23-year-old, who suffers from Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), said she had done patch tests before using the wax strips but was not prepared for the results.

A qualified beautician, she said: "When I did it my top lip stung a little bit, and a little bit of skin came off, but I thought I'd just pulled a bit too hard.

"Then I came to do my chin. As soon as I ripped the strip off my chin was burning. My skin was raw. It was so red and I was in so much pain. I was nearly in tears from the pain."

The woman, who said she had struggled with facial hair from an early age, said she had visited the pharmacy, with staff advising her to go to the doctor's due to a high risk of infection.

But the mum-of-one, who is run off her feet with a two-year-old has not yet had time to visit the doctor.

She said: "I was told by the pharmacist that I would have some scarring that would fade a  bit over time."

The young woman said she had started plucking when she was 15 due to the high levels of male hormones her PCOS induces.

She said: "I get thick, course, black hairs on my chin because of my PCOS. They're really tough to get rid of, and I have to pluck every day. I get about six big ones a lot on my chin.

"I'd used the strips because the packaging said that they were suitable for all skin types and specifically for use on the face, and because I have very sensitive skin.

"I'd never used them before on my face, but I'd used wax strips on my arms and other parts. My skin would go a bit red just afterwards, as normal, but then it would be okay."

She said: "I was really self-conscious, people kept staring and saying how bad it looked.

"I didn't put any make up on it because I didn't want it to get infected and make it worse."

She said while the pain had been bad, the embarrassment was even worse.

She said: "This is the last thing I need, really. I'm already backwards and forwards to the doctor's to see what can be done about my facial hair growth because it's embarrassing."

She has also spoken out about the cost of the product that caused the damage.

Danielle said: "I paid around £5 for the strips, so they weren't cheap £1 or 50p things.

"I'd never use any Veet products again. I'd be worried this would happen again if I waxed."

A Veet spokesperson said: "All Veet products are vigorously tested for safety and efficacy. Our products should always be used as directed as per the instructions on the pack and in the patient information leaflet.
