Trump's loud sniffing in the opening minutes of Monday's first presidential debate with Hillary Clinton got plenty of attention on social media.

With some bizarrely hinting the man who makes a habit of getting up other peoples' noses may have put something up his.

The former six-term Vermont governor Howard Dean even took to Twitter not with a meme but with a message, suggesting that Trump's nasal troubles could be due to cocaine use.

Mr Trump - an anti-drugs campaigner - was quick to point out last night that the 'sniffing' was down to problems with his microphone but that didn't stop the cheeky posts.

The noticeable sniffing, or loud breathing, even generated hashtags like #trumpsniffles on Twitter.

Many social media users saw Trump’s cold as an opportunity to mock a presidential candidate who has repeatedly called his rival’s health into question.

Others joked about #Trumpsniff potentially being a way for the billionaire businessman to avoid answering awkward questions.

The bad-tempered debate saw Hillary Clinton brand Donald Trump racist and sexist the White House candidates went head-to-head for the first time.

Clinton accused Trump of spreading a “racist lie” that Barack Obama was not an American citizen, adding that the billionaire businessman “has a long record of engaging in racist behavior”.

Clinton also called into question Trump’s alleged sexist remarks about women, reminding the audience at Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York of him previously calling women “pigs” and other derogatory names.

Clinton’s stinging attack came as the rivals shouted back and forth at one another throughout the debate.

Both repeatedly accused the other of being unfit to serve as president and called into question the other candidate’s record on security, employment, race issues and gun crime.
