Who is Payton Gendron?

Payton is the son of Paul and Pamela Gendron and is from Conklin, New York.

In May 2022, he made headlines after he was arrested and charged with multiple hate crimes stemming from the Tops Friendly Supermarket massacre.

Gendron's charges included 14 hate crimes and 13 firearms offenses, according to .

After pleading not guilty to the charges against him, the 19-year-old was sentenced to life in prison, without parole, for his racist-fueled rampage.

What happened at Tops Friendly Supermarket in Buffalo, New York?

On May 14, 2022, at least 13 people were shot at a Tops Friendly Supermarket in Buffalo.

According to Buffalo Police Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia, 10 of the 13 victims were killed, four of the people shot were store employees and a total of 11 victims were African American.

Gendron was wearing military gear and carrying a rifle into the store while live-streaming the tragic event on Twitch.

Gendron reportedly drove over 200 miles to carry out the attack and would have carried out a second attack if he was not apprehended at Tops.

The shooting quickly gained national attention and happened just 10 days before 19 students and two teachers were fatally shot by Salvador Ramos at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas.

What did Joe Biden say about the shooting?

Just a few days after the Buffalo shooting, President Joe Biden headed to New York to meet the families of the victims.

He later held a press conference, where he stated that "evil will not win."

He continued: "In America, evil will not win, I promise you. Hate will not prevail, white supremacy will not have the last word.”

Biden has since called for stronger gun laws to help prevent future mass shootings.
