Paris supermarket shooting leaves two critical after gunman opens fire before handing himself in after police surround his flat

The victims, a man and a woman, have been rushed to hospital in a serious condition

TWO people have been injured in a shooting in a supermarket west of Paris with the shooter now involved in a stand off with police.

The suspect, reportedly a man in his 70s, was holed up in an apartment surrounded by elite police officers before handing himself in, a police official said.

, the suspect, who was a regular at the supermarket, pulled up in a car at the supermarket before opening fire on a female cashier, aged 57.

He then reportedly targeted a 73-year-old man before fleeing the scene.

The injuries of the two people shot are unknown but it has been reported that they were seriously wounded.

It is understood that the victims were rushed to the nearest hospital.

The shooting occurred about 20kms west of Paris at Le Port-Marly

A spokeswoman for the prosecutor's office said that the shooting was "in principle, not a terrorism issue".

Police have said: "He (the shooter) went home and the RAID (elite police unit) is readying for negotiations with him".

The motive for the shooting has been described as a "personal matter".
