Aldi to open 70 new stores in 2017 as record sales reported
Low-cost supermarket chain has reported sales of £7.7bn
BUDGET supermarket Aldi is set to open 70 new stores in 2017 as it reveals a 12per cent increase in sales during 2015.
The low-cost supermarket chain has reported record sales of £7.7billion and said it plans to invest £300million in its British stores.
The supermarket currently has 785 stores in the UK and Ireland and hopes to increase this to 1,000 by 2022.
More than 100 stores will also be refurbished as part of the investment - with newly designed areas for alcohol, fresh produce and food-to-go.
Matthew Barnes, CEO of Aldi UK and Ireland said: “We've completed our largest-ever listening exercise, involving over 50,000 shoppers across our stores.
"We've listened and we're evolving our new format for new and existing stores to deliver what our customers want."
Aldi’s sales have doubled in the last three years and it has cut the prices of 30 pc of its products so far in 2016.
Aldi and its German discount rival Lidl remain Britain's fastest growing supermarkets with a combined market share of 10.8pc.
Despite record sales figures the company saw operating profits slump by 1.8pc to £255.6m - which the supermarket has attributed to its investment in prices.
