One girl enjoyed a joke with cops as she wore an officer's helmet - but others clashed with police and had to be restrained after scuffles in the early hours and one young man was seen with blood streaming from his nose.

Elsewhere boozed-up students were seen walking topless in the rain or slumped on the pavement while one found a place to nap in a brightly lit takeaway restaurant.

Other revellers were seen urinating in the street and one vomited over a barrier in the queue for a nightclub.

Around 80,000 students descend on the city this week for the start of term.

University bosses hired two security guards to patrol the Fallowfield area, an area particularly popular with students.

The guards will work watch students' safety and keep an eye on their antics – reporting any anti-social behaviour to the universities.

Local councillor Rebecca Moore said: “They will act as a visible guardian and a professional witness who can gather evidence of any problems.

“This scheme will be good for a lot of residents and for students as it will hopefully make them feel a bit safer.”
