Tragic car accident kills Royal Navy Engineer on his way to fight jihadis in Syria
Simon Allen had stopped off in Malta as the HMS Daring made its way to fight ISIS in the Middle East
A ROYAL Navy sailor on his way to fight ISIS was killed in a car accident in Malta, an inquest heard.
Leading Engineering Technician Simon Allen, 30, died on September 13 while his ship HMS Daring was on a stop-off.
Cops say Simon, from Wigan, Gtr Manchester, was hit by a Peugeot 508 in harbour town Msida.
An inquest was opened and adjourned at Bolton coroner’s court pending further enquiries. Malta police are investigating.
HMS Daring left Portsmouth on September 2 with a 190-strong crew for a nine-month deployment to the Persian Gulf.
It is providing air defence for French and US aircraft carriers as they attack IS targets in Iraq and Syria.
A spokesman for The Royal Navy said: "LET Allen's next of kin have been informed and our thoughts and condolences are with them at this difficult time.
"Police in Malta are investigating the incident. It would be inappropriate for us to discuss any further at this time."

Speaking about the deployment prior to the tragedy, the ship's commanding officer, commander Philip Dennis, said: "HMS Daring has been through intense training to be in a position to take on this deployment and I am proud of my ship's company for all their hard work in getting to this state of readiness."
