Downton Abbey official DVD collection costs £220 more than the old box set
The show’s 52-part Official DVD Collection offers a magazine and disc every fortnight but comes at an extortionate price
DOWNTON Abbey fans have blasted a new package containing every episode — costing seven times more than the old DVD box set.
The show’s 52-part Official DVD Collection offers a magazine and disc every fortnight.
The first issue is £1.99 but after that it is £4.99, meaning the full collection will add up to £256.48.
Fans have spotted you can buy all the episodes, minus the final special, in a DVD box set for just £34.99 at HMV.
A viewer told The Sun on Sunday: "I know they put a magazine with it, but it seems an outrageous sum.
“You can get more-or-less the same thing for so much cheaper. I know the box sets don’t have the final episode in them – but you can still get that for just a few quid. It’s not exactly worth £220.
“The firm behind this must want to buy their own abbey at that price.”
Downton Abbey ran for six series and was lauded with awards and critical praise.
It made megastars of Hugh Bonneville and cemented the reputations of legends like Dame Maggie Smith.
Current TV adverts for the collection are narrated by Jim Carter, who plays Mr Carson in the show.
In the commercial he intones: “Enjoy every moment from the very beginning with the official Downton Abbey DVD Collection.
“Each issue comes with a fascinating companion guide, giving you insights into the characters, the fashions and the events of the day.
“Yours to treasure forever, the official Downton Abbey DVD Collection, issue one out now just £1.99."
