NORTH-SOUTH DIVIDE

Severe weather warnings in place for northern England and Scotland this weekend – but the sun will shine in the south

September on course to be one of the warmest on record

SCOTLAND and the north of England will be battered by torrential rain and gales this weekend, while the south enjoys unseasonably warm weather.

The Met Office has issued weather warnings for west Scotland tomorrow with four inches of rain and strong winds forecast.

While floods and travel chaos are expected up north the mercury could nudge 24C in the south east as sunny skies and southerly breezes bring back that summer feeling.

Today most of the country is enjoying warm weather, although it will become windy in the northwest later.

Met Office forecaster Emma Boorman said: “We have a rather unsettled weekend ahead in parts of the country.

“We expect winds to strengthen in Scotland overnight on Friday with heavy rain coming through the region through Saturday.

“It will also stay windy with the chance of gales - we expect wind speeds of around 40mph, perhaps a bit higher.

“However elsewhere it is going to be a fairly decent day, mild with sunny spells before some rain moves southwards on Sunday."

She continued: “This will die down and the remainder of Sunday will be fairly bright with some breeze and blustery showers - temperatures around 22C or 23C in London.”

Despite rain on the horizon it will remain much warmer than average for the time of year as September shapes up to be one of the warmest on record.

Even in the north thermometers will hover around 17C.

Met Office chief forecaster Steve Willington warned that strong winds predicted for the north tomorrow threaten to bring travel disruption and difficult driving conditions.

The weather chief said: “Across the West Highlands and Western Isles, rain will become persistent later on Friday and occasionally turn heavy during Saturday.

“Rain will be accompanied by strong to gale-force southerly winds, and leaf fall and tree debris may reduce road drainage.

“Excess surface water could lead to localised flooding in prone areas, whilst strong winds are also likely to generate rough seas.

“Be aware of the likelihood of some limited travel disruption and difficult driving conditions. The rain will start to clear this region later on Saturday evening.”
