SLANGING matches between political opponents are nothing new but in extraordinary scenes on live TV two election candidates took it further.

Well, they actually took it a lot further and after insulting each other on air they turned it into a fist fight.

After coming to blows they had to be kept apart by some of the staff at the Georgian TV network Qvemo Kartli and the programme was then stopped completely.

Polad Khalikov, a candidate for the Industrial political bloc, gestured to Vepkhia Gurgenishvili, and asked why “this scum” had been invited onto the show.

He then threatened to break glass on his head which prompted Gurgenishvili to stand up and throw a pen at his opponent.

After a weak attempt to keep the pair apart Khalikov walked over to the other man and took a swing at him.

They both managed to land a few blows before producers intervened and dragged them apart.

Deciding it was probably better to not ask them to apologise to each other and to sit down and resume the show, the programme makers decided to just end it there.

The political climate is heating up in Georgia in the run up to elections.

They are scheduled for just over two weeks away, on October 8, so this might not be the last time a political talk show in the country has to end early.
