Tributes paid to ‘beautiful’ young woman who died from head injury during game

TRIBUTES have been paid to a "beautiful" young athlete who died in a freak accident during a match.

Kate Moran, 21, suffered a serious head injury while playing Irish stick and ball game Camogie.

It is understood she was hit by the ball while attempting to block it during a senior league game on Monday.

Kate was rushed to hospital in Galway but sadly couldn't be saved and passed away yesterday.

The match between Athenry and Ardrahan was abandoned following the horror.

Kate was a prominent player for several Galway underage teams and other members of her family are renowned GAA (Gaelic Athletic Association) players.

She played with Athenry Camogie Club from underage level to Senior A level winning Minor County and Intermediate County titles.

The rising star, who studied commerce at the National University of Ireland, Galway, also won two All Irelands at U16 level with Galway.

Tributes have now flooded in for Kate from local clubs following the tragedy.

Athenry Camogie Club said: "This is a terrible tragedy for her family, our club and our community.

"We are deeply saddened by these events. Our sympathy and thoughts are with the Moran family and friends. Kate will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

"She was a tremendous role model for our many underage players and a wonderful leader both on and off the field of play.

"Her bubbly personality will be remembered for eternity."

Oranmore Maree GAA also paid tribute to the young star following her tragic death.

DEVASTATING NEWS

The club said: "Galway Camogie clubs woke up to devastating news this morning with the passing of a beautiful young Athenry camogie player, Kate Moran.

"The bond between our two clubs goes way back, always a competitive rivalry but also a friendship among the girls both on and off the field at every age group."

They added: "Oranmore Maree Camogie club offer our deepest sympathies to the Kate's parents Cathal and Mary, Kate's siblings and all the Moran family, to the Brennan family, Clarinbridge, and to all in Athenry Camogie Club, in particular the Athenry Senior Management & Senior panel.

"Fly high with the angels Kate. Ar dheis De go raibh a hanam."

Sylane Hurling & Camogie Club said they "would like to extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Kate Moran".

Local teams also announced that they plan to postponed adult and juvenile games this week as a mark of respect.

Local councillor Shelly Hertich Quinn added: "Deep, deep sadness and lot of shock in Athenry today after the tragic incident at the game in Athenry yesterday.
