Troops hounded by Iraq war crime allegations to take MoD to court over ‘witch hunt’
PM Theresa May said she will not allow an "industry of vexatious allegations" against former soldiers
MORE than 200 troops being hounded by a taxpayer-funded witch-hunt into alleged Iraq war crimes are taking the MoD to court over their treatment.
The servicemen have been targeted by the Iraq Historic Allegations Team — set up to probe claims of abuse of Iraqi civilians.
They will seek a Judicial Review at the High Court forcing the MoD to provide a scheme of help and support for them, including free legal advice and time limits on cases from years ago.
Solicitor Hilary Meredith, who is defending many of them against spurious slurs, said the move follows “untrue” Government claims troops are getting the support they need.
She said: “Foreign nationals are getting our financial legal aid — but our soldiers are being left on their own.”
Theresa May has insisted she will not allow an “industry of vexatious allegations” against former soldiers.
But Tory MP Johnny Mercer urged the PM to end the witch-hunt and close IHAT.
