MUM'S AGONY

Our Easter was ruined after son ate ‘salmonella from Kinder egg’ & was rushed to hospital – he was so ill he looked dead

A MUM was left terrified after her three-year-old son was rushed to the hospital after suffering suspected salmonella poisoning from a Kinder egg.

Mum-of-two Kasey Cooke, from Barry, Wales, said doctors were worried her boy could fall into a coma due to a huge drop in his blood sugar levels and her family said he "looked dead".

Son Billy Way became incredibly ill and couldn't get up just days after eating a pack of Kinder Surprise eggs.

It comes after Chocolate manufacturer Ferrero issued urgent warning to recall batches of Kinder Surprise eggs originated in Belgium over salmonella fears earlier this month.

It is thought that 63 people in the UK, mostly young children, have become infected with salmonella in an outbreak linked to the product.

The company said they "deeply regret this matter".

"It was terrible. It wasn't worth it for an egg," Kasey .

"He couldn't keep anything down and couldn't even hold his weight on his feet."

The 26-year-old mum took Billy to Noah's Ark Children's Hospital in Cardiff, Wales, where he was kept on a drip for four days.

"The doctors were worried he could have gone into a coma as his blood sugar was so low. I was petrified, " she continued.

"When I sent my family a picture of him in hospital, their response was that he looked dead.

"He looked like he was dying, his mouth was dry, his face was pale and his eyes were black and sunken. He didn't sit up for a week."

Kasey didn't suspect that Kinder eggs were the cause originally but realised the symptoms matched salmonella poisoning after learning about the product recall.

She added: "The doctors did stool samples and they found bacteria in his poo, which is why they thought it was salmonella.

"I think it's careless that salmonella got into the eggs, especially when the main consumer of the product is kids."

Billy was discharged from hospital on April 7 and he is now recovering.

He looked like he was dying.

The mum said she will never let Billy or her five-year-old son Ajay near a Kinder product again and has now sent chocolate giant Ferrero an email demanding compensation for her son.

She said: "I feel my son should be compensated, even if it's just so I can take him away to Butlin's.

"He spent almost a week in hospital and he's lost weight as he didn't eat any food for seven days."

A Ferrero spokesperson said: "We are very sorry to hear about Billy Way and our sincere thoughts are with him and his family at this time. We deeply regret this matter.

"We continue to work closely with the food safety authorities to support their investigations.
