Who is Frank James?

ON APRIL 12, 2022, Frank James was named as a person of interest after a shooting took place on a Brooklyn subway train.

James was arrested in New York City one day after the incident and has been sentenced to a lifetime behind bars.

Who is Frank James?

Frank James, born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, fired a handgun on a Manhattan-bound N subway train during a morning commute on April 12, 2022.

James, who was 62 during the shooting, wounded 29 individuals and left many New York natives scarred after the incident.

NYPD officers arrested James in Manhattan's East Village, outside of East Village Wines, just one day later, authorities said.

A Glock 17, three Glock magazines, shell casings, bullets, two detonated smoke grenades, two undetonated ones, a hatchet, and a U-Haul van key were found at the scene.

On October 5, 2023, James received 10 concurrent life terms plus a 10-year consecutive term in prison, per .

In January 2023, he pleaded guilty in federal court to 10 counts of committing a terrorist attack against a mass transport vehicle.

He also received an additional firearms charge related to the attack.

What happened during the shooting?

Prior to the shooting, James reportedly set off a gas device to hide his identity.

Authorities said the incident happened just before 8:24am EST, during a normal morning commute.

As a Manhattan-bound N train waited to enter 36th Street, James, who was on the train, donned what appeared to be a gas mask.

He took a canister out of his bag, opened it, and then proceeded to strike multiple people on the subway and the platform.

How many victims were there?

On the day of the incident, a chief spokesperson for FDNY said at least 16 people were confirmed to be injured and taken to local hospitals.

Most victims were treated for shrapnel, gunshot wounds, and smoke inhalation, but police said none experienced life-threatening injuries.

Approximately 10 people were shot and an additional 13 were either injured as they rushed to get out of the train station or they suffered smoke inhalation.

Of the total number of people who were shot, seven of them were male and three were female.
