BORIS Johnson was mocked last night after he was seen looking completely bored and playing with his phone as Theresa May addressed the UN Assembly.

Twitters users suggested that while the Prime Minister was telling world leaders about the crisis in Syria her Foreign Secretary was secretly catching Pokémon.

Many suggested he was showing  a lack of respect for his boss, after Mrs May brought him in from the cold to join her Cabinet.

After Mr Johnson’s own bid for the Tory leadership was torpedoed by Michael Gove his political career looked in serious jeopardy.

But the women who won the contest to replace David Cameron brought him back into the fold earlier this summer and gave him the plum job as foreign Secretary.

The former mayor of London didn’t look overly grateful last night though, as he seemed thoroughly disengaged with her impassioned plea that the UK will be a “confident, strong and dependable partner internationally” despite Brexit.

Social media users were annoyed with his behaviour, with Simone Pomari posting: “Shame on Boris Johnson playing with his phone during May's #UN speech which condemns Syria aid convoy attack.”

Another, Nicole Le Marie, wrote: “Good to see Boris Johnson is paying attention to his boss’s speech, wonder what’s so interesting on his phone?”

And Twitter user Adam Evans joked: “Trying to work out if Boris is playing Pokémon Go or, as a devout classicist, Snake on his phone during Theresa May's speech to the UN.”

Mrs May used for her first address to the UN General Assembly in New York to urge world leaders to reconnect with voters as millions face being “left behind” by globalisation.

In a powerful speech she said political leaders had to remember they were “servants” of men, women and children who felt cut off.

“The challenge for those of us in this room is to ensure that our governments and our global institutions remain responsive to the people that we serve,” she said.

Elsewhere at the summit Mr Johnson met his Russian counterpart for the first time since taking office to discuss the "unacceptable" attack on an aid convoy in Syria, hours after a ceasefire ended.

Nobody has yet claimed responsibility for the atrocity, which resulted in the deaths of 20 civilians, although the US has said it was either a Russia or Syrian strike which did the damage.

After the talks with Sergei Lavrov a Foreign Office spokesman said: "The ministers discussed the crisis in Syria and the increase in violence in recent days, including the recent unacceptable attack on an aid convoy.

"The Foreign Secretary pressed for Russia to use its influence constructively and underlined the need for the international community to work together to resolve the conflict.”
