SWEDEN PREPARES FOR WAR

Tanks and hundreds of soldiers are secretly placed on high alert over ‘Russian nuke threat’

Russian military chiefs have warned the threat from the powerful nation is rising

SWEDEN has sent troops and tanks to an island in the Baltic Sea because of Russian aggression, it has been reported.

Soldiers and armour have been deployed to strategically important Gotland because of a specific 'threat' from Putin's armies, according to a Swedish newspaper.

The move comes shortly after Sweden’s Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces Micael Bydén and defence minister Peter Hultqvist spoke of their fears about growing military aggression from Moscow.

At the same time, Sweden sent sent 150 soldiers from central Swedish town of Skövde to train on Gotland - but the soldiers have now been  ordered to stay.

The specifics of the threat are reportedly top secret.

"Something has happened in the intelligence picture, but we citizens don’t know what. We can see the effects of it however. The rapid basing of a unit on Gotland is exceptional," intelligence analysis professor Wilhelm Agrell told .

Swedish Armed Forces press secretary Jesper Tengroth denied that new intelligence about Russia prompted the deployment.

He said@ "It’s a worsening over time in the surrounding world that is behind this, and with regards to DN’s information, we don’t comment on our intelligence work," he told news agency TT.

Hans Wallmark, the defence policy spokesperson for the opposition Moderate party, added:

"This shows a steadily deteriorating security picture around the Baltic Sea."

The mechanised company will have 168 military men and 15 tanks deployed at any one time.
