Tim Farron says Theresa May may need to put the Brexit deal to the British people before we leave the EU
Leeds chief executive Gary Hetherington reveals globe-trotting is on the agenda
A SECOND referendum may have to happen before Britain leaves the EU, Tim Farron says.
The Lib Dem leader said he respects the British people’s decision on June 23 to vote for Brexit.
But he said if people do not like the deal Theresa May gets with the European Union then he thinks she will hold another referendum.
Speaking on this morning’s Andrew Marr Show he said: “There needs to be a referendum on the deal.
“If people see the deal unravelling, Theresa May is a pragmatic person and I think she will shift [and call another referendum].”
With Jeremy Corbyn widely expected to retain his position as Labour leader when the party’s leadership contest result is announced next Saturday, Farron said this is terrible for Britain.
He said: “The Conservative government maybe in power for another quarter century and Britain will sleepwalk out of the European Union.
“My job is to build a progressive movement that will challenge the Conservative Party.
“That’s a massive project.
“What people want is a clear voice that will hold the Conservative government to account.
“My job is to fill that space and I’m determined to do that.”
