A MAN has been arrested after a lorry dramatically smashed through the gates of the Russian Embassy in Dublin today.

The embassy, in Orwell Road, Dublin, has been targeted several times in the past few days amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Cops have confirmed that they have arrested a man.

A garda spokeswoman said: "Gardaí are investigating an incident of criminal damage that occurred at a property on Orwell Road this afternoon, Monday 7th March 2022 at approximately 1.30pm.

"One male was arrested and taken to Rathfarnham Garda Station where he is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

"Investigations are ongoing."

A spokesman for Desmond Wisley Ecclesiastical Supplies confirmed that they were aware of the crash involving their lorry, but offered no further comment.

It comes after a number of demonstrations at the site recently after Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Last week a priest threw red paint over the gates of the embassy while speaking to RTE's Joe Duffy live on air.

Fr. Fergal MacDonagh travelled to the embassy last Friday afternoon, claiming that his actions were his way of letting Ukrainians know that he supports them during Russia's ongoing invasion.

He said while on air: "I'm outside the gates of the Russian Embassy in Dublin.

"I'm about to throw paint at it. I won't be the first and I won't be the last. I'm going to do it now. I'm trying to not spill it.

"I threw the empty tin of paint on the driveway, I'm furious at what is happening. There were children being born in bomb shelters."
