Are schools open or closed on Presidents’ Day?

Presidents' Day has been observed in the US since 1885, making this year the 139th year the holiday is observed.

As a federal holiday, it can be expected that most public schools will be closed on Presidents' Day.

However, charter schools and some private schools may be opened.

The holiday marks the celebration of the birth of America’s first president, George Washington.

As this day is considered a federal holiday in the US many other places will likely be closed.

In addition to schools, people can also expect banks in the US to be closed in observance of the holiday.

Many Americans will be enjoying a three-day weekend due to the holiday.

People should plan ahead if they'll need to mail items as the United States Postal Service is also closed on Presidents Day.

Aside from remembering Washington, the day is also known to celebrate the present and former leaders of the US.

The White House also celebrates the presidential holiday each year.

Other groups and organizations honor Presidents' Day as well.

According to , the Boy Scouts of America also held celebrations on the day, and in 1938 some 5,000 people attended mass at Saint Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City in honor of Washington.

When was George Washington born?

The first president of the US was not in fact born on February 19.

Washington was born on February 22, 1732, hypothetically making the former president would be 292 years old in 2024.

This holiday began following the death of Washington in 1799, his February 22 birthday became a perennial day of remembrance.

Presidents' Day was previously always celebrated on Washington's actual birthday.

That was until 1971 when it was officially changed to the third Monday in February.
