Two people, a 40-year-old woman and a 39-year-old man, had been bitten by the out of control American pitbull.

The woman then got trapped in the upstairs bedroom of the house while the dog remained downstairs, allegedly trying to bite others.

A firearms officer then shot the berserk dog when it became clear it could not be controlled.

A North Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: "The dog was extremely aggressive and still in the property when officers arrived.

"The injured woman was also still inside the property.

"Efforts were made to try and control the dog in order to reach the woman, who was in need of urgent medical assistance.
