Those ordered on to the sex offenders’ register are meant to notify authorities where they are living and working.

David Spencer, of campaign group the Centre for Crime Prevention, said: “It is scandalous that there should be more than 500 loose and unsupervised in our communities.

“These individuals could pose a serious risk to public safety and locating them should be an urgent priority for police forces.

“The policy of not publicising these names to alert the public should be reversed immediately.”

The largest number of missing offenders is in London where the Met has responsibility for 10,762 offenders but does not know the locations of 233.

Level 2 offenders, who pose a “high or very high risk of serious harm”, are among those absent in at least two regions.

Some 41 of the 44 forces in England and Wales provided answers to the freedom of information poll about the 78,000 people on the register.

Nottinghamshire, Northumbria and Humberside didn’t respond.

Manchester Police has none missing.
