British mum to spend five years in Iran jail over alleged plot to topple regime

NAZANIN Zaghari-Ratcliffe was arrested trying to return to Britain after visiting family

A BRITISH-Iranian mum has been jailed for five years in Iran after being accused of plotting to topple the regime.

Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, 37, was arrested in Tehran on April 3 trying to return to Britain after visiting family with her daughter Gabriella, two.

She has suffered weight loss, lost hair and became virtually unable to walk since being jailed, says husband Richard Ratcliffe, of Hampstead, North West London.

He has branded the sentence “a punishment without a crime”.

He added that the charges against her "remain secret" as she was sentenced behind closed doors in Iran's revolutionary court.

Gabriella, who had her second birthday in June without her mother or father, is being cared for in Tehran by her grandparents, who speak little English.

Nazanin’s lawyer has been asked to appeal against the sentence but no date has been set for the appeal yet.
