Austin Peay Highway crash – ‘Two critical & others hospitalized’ in 16-vehicle pile up in Memphis, Tennessee

AT least six people have been injured in a horrific 16 vehicle pile-up on Austin Peay Highway in Memphis, Tennessee.

ABC24 Memphis is reporting that 21 people were involved in the wreck, which occurred around 4:30pm local time.

Six have reportedly been transported to the hospital.

Two are in critical condition and four are in non-critical condition, according to the outlet.

FOX13 reports three of those injured were taken to Regional One Hospital.

Memphis Fire Department responded to the scene.

The MPD shared in a tweet that a MATA Bus has arrived on the scene to keep people warm.

"Avoid the area and expect significant delays," the concludes.

Traffic reporter Corie Ventura shared on Twitter that Austin Peay Highway is closed from James Road to Coleman Road.

An ice storm has slammed the region, making roadways very icy and dangerous.

Freezing rain is expected on and off for the next several hours, according to forecasters.

Mayor Jim Strickland declared a state of emergency on Thursday in Memphis due to worsening conditions.

The investigation into the accident is ongoing.
