At least four people killed after train derails and crashes into a steel power pole in northern Spain

AT least four people have been killed and more than a dozen injured after a passenger train derailed and collided with a power line in Spain this morning.

The train was travelling from Vigo, via the Portuguese town of Valenca do Minho, to Porto when the accident occurred.

The local authorities said there "numerous" people also injured, while emergency services were currently working on site.

About 60 people were on board when it crashed.

According to , the crash occurred at 9.30 this morning just 650ft away from pulling into the station.

The first carriage derailed entirely, while the following two suffered only minor damage.

Sources told the paper one of those killed was the train driver, a Portuguese national.

The administration body for Spain's rail said it was launching an investigation into the crash.

Several political parties have also suspended their election campaigning for the day.

In 2013, 80 people were killed in Spain's worst rail disaster in decades when a high-speed train went off the tracks and slammed into a wall near Santiago de Compostela, in Galicia.
